Shanghai Shenhua shine in the Women's tournament
Published On

Shanghai Shenhua Women were undoubtedly the team of Day 1 at the Soccer7sSeries as they came roaring out the blocks to score eight goals in two games and secure six points in the Women's tournament.
The Chinese side started their campaign by putting four past both Corinthians Feminino and then followed up with another four-goal feast against Albirex Niigata FC Women – with just one goal conceded the only blot on their perfect day topping Group A.
Yu Jia Hiu, against Feminino, was also the first player of the tournament to score a hat-trick in the second game of the whole event and she sits top of the scoring charts heading into Day 2 with three goals.
Shenhua looked a good bet to end the day as the only women's team on six points only for QPR Hoops, who had themselves beaten Still Aerion 5-0 earlier in the day, to score a late winner through Grace Stanley against Hashtag United. This ensured the West London team also ended the day on six points to top Group B.
Geylang International and QPR Women began proceedings with the very first game of the event and it was Rangers who came out on top 2-0 winners to make a great start.
The highlight of the chasing pack was an epic penalty save from Selangor FC goalkeeper Ezza Ashikin to keep out the last kick of the match, ensuring the Malaysian side took all three points against Eastern Thunder Women.
The Men's Open will start their campaigns on Day 2 while the Women's and Masters play out their final group games ahead of the knockouts on Sunday.
